While most of the readers/writers on this page only support PCMCIA ATA-compliant storage cards (such as ATA flash card, compact flash card, smartmedia card, etc.), the PCI-interfaced universal card drives (readers/writers) go even further: they also support almost all kinds of 16-bit PCMCIA cards, and some models, such as PCD-RP-202CS & PCD-101CS can support both 16-bit and 32-bit cardbus cards.

The rear-mount internal PC card reader/writer models PCD-RP-202CS & PCD-101CS are your good choices for space-limited situation. These PCI-interfaced readers work under Windows and read almost all PCMCIA cards. The PCD-RP-202CS PC card readers are recommended for use with IEEE802.11x wireless LAN & wireless modem PC cards, such as Cingular EDGE cards; Verizon/Sierra Aircard 550, 555D, 750, 5240, etc.; Novatel Merlin; Qualcomm and other wireless modem cards, etc. This same model is also recommended by Raymarine for working with their GPS and other PC card products. For Verizon, Sprint or Novatel V620 wireless modem, the Ricoh chipset PCD-101CS, should be your better bet!

We recommend the following PCI internal PC card readers if you try to use the 3G data card on a desktop PC. If your laptop or desktop PC already has the ExpressCard slot, you can use our single-slot ExpressCard Slot Adapter for your PCMCIA 3G cards.

PCI internal readers/adapters:

Most of the wireless cards on the market now are 32-bit cardbus cards so you have to use a PCI-based internal 32-bit PC card reader like PCD-110CS, PCD-RP-202CS, PCD-101CS, P222, etc. listed below.

The success rate of these PCI-based internal PC card read-writers for Verizon or Sierra Aircards or Kyocera or Novatel, or Qualcomm, Sprint EVD, etc. wireless cards is about 95%. The failure is due to a complex combination of your PC hardware, it's BIOS, your O/S setup and your wireless modem driver. Windows 98, ME & XP normally has fewer problems than Windows 2000.

For PCs and Macs with USB ports, please be advised that USB read-writers normally can not support non-storage cards, such as wired or wireless modem, ethernet, and other I/O controller cards.

Note: For customers who use PCMCIA linear flash and/or SRAM cards:

Some of our PCI & USB PC card readers can read/write certain brands (not all) of linear flash and SRAM cards under Windows. We now have drivers for SRAM and linear flash cards under Win 95, 98, Me, XP & 2000. If your SRAM and/or linear flash cards were not purchased through us, we can't guarantee their compatibility with Windows.
